THE TERROIR
THE GRAPE VARIETIES
Vale do Lima’s wines are made predominantly from the region’s typical grape varieties, which at Quinta de Cypriano include Loureiro for whites and Vinhão for reds.
Loureiro, in particular, stands out for its elegance and floral aromas, which are intensified by the weather conditions and careful vineyard management.
Vinhão is one of the most important and quintessential red grape varieties in the Vinho Verde region and is especially cultivated in Vale do Lima. Known for its deep ruby colour and intense flavours, Vinhão offers a distinctive wine experience that reflects the region’s unique terroir and winemaking traditions.
The tradition of treading grapes by foot in granite vats is an age-old practice that is still maintained at the Cypriano vineyards. This artisanal technique not only respects the integrity of the grapes, but also gently extracts the aromatic compounds and tannins, resulting in wines of great finesse and complexity. The use of granite vats, with their ability to maintain a stable temperature during fermentation, contributes to the creation of fresh, delicate wines with a balanced structure and an authentic terroir expression.
In summary, the Vale do Lima terroir is a harmonious combination of granite soil, a moderate climate with an Atlantic influence, and traditional winegrowing practices. The wines produced at Quinta de Cypriano, especially the ones made using the technique of treading grapes by foot in granite vats, are a true expression of the authenticity and cultural heritage of Vale do Lima, providing a unique and memorable wine experience.
