THE TERROIR

The Vinho Verde region, especially Vale do Lima where we are located, is a terroir with unique characteristics that are reflected in the quality and uniqueness of our wines. Located in north-western Portugal, this valley is marked by a lush landscape with vineyards that stretch along the banks of the River Lima, benefiting from a temperate and humid microclimate that combines Atlantic influences with the protection of the surrounding mountains. This region benefits from a combination of mild temperatures and high rainfall, creating ideal conditions for the production of wines with a balanced acidity and freshness. The soil in Vale do Lima is mainly granitic, giving a distinct minerality to the wines produced in the region. In addition, the variable altitude and sun exposure of the vineyards allow the grapes to ripen in a balanced way, preserving the vibrant acidity characteristic of Vinho Verde, contributing to the complexity and depth of its aromas.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES

Vale do Lima’s wines are made predominantly from the region’s typical grape varieties, which at Quinta de Cypriano include Loureiro for whites and Vinhão for reds.

Loureiro, in particular, stands out for its elegance and floral aromas, which are intensified by the weather conditions and careful vineyard management.

Vinhão is one of the most important and quintessential red grape varieties in the Vinho Verde region and is especially cultivated in Vale do Lima. Known for its deep ruby colour and intense flavours, Vinhão offers a distinctive wine experience that reflects the region’s unique terroir and winemaking traditions.

The tradition of treading grapes by foot in granite vats is an age-old practice that is still maintained at the Cypriano vineyards. This artisanal technique not only respects the integrity of the grapes, but also gently extracts the aromatic compounds and tannins, resulting in wines of great finesse and complexity. The use of granite vats, with their ability to maintain a stable temperature during fermentation, contributes to the creation of fresh, delicate wines with a balanced structure and an authentic terroir expression.
